| One evening, Ayu ended up staying up the night at Taka’s house, where she joined his family for a meal. When Taka cooked a meal with Ayu—the first time the two of them had ever cooked together, he realized that the “teamwork” he had struggled to achieve with his wife came about with Ayu with surprising, natural ease. Later that night, without a moment’s hesitation, Ayu removed her makeup, revealing her true, unadorned face for Taka for the very first time. Taka’s wife went to the bedroom to put their daughters to sleep and ended up falling asleep herself. Since both Taka and Ayu were night owls, they stayed up until dawn, lying under a kotatsu—a low table draped with a blanket, a type of heating apparatus unique to Japan—watching television and talking. Inside the kotatsu, one of Taka’s legs—from his thighs down to his calves—was in contact with Ayu’s, yet she made no move to pull away. A question arose in Taka’s mind: was Ayu unaware of the contact, was she unbothered by it, or did she perhaps even desire it? The next morning, Taka’s wife invited Ayu to join Taka’s family on a trip. Ayu happily agreed to come along. This photograph was taken during that trip. | ||||||
